Lundy from the air © Jonathan Evans

Lundy is an island in the Bristol Channel between England and Wales on the west coast of Britain. It attracts many visitors, both for its peaceful surroundings and for scientific research. The waters around it are a marine protected area (MPA). The island itself is mostly granite with a farmed area at the south and open moorland to the north. It is protected by numerous environmental and heritage designations.

The Lundy Field Society is an independent, voluntary group which has been studying all aspects of Lundy's archaeology, history and natural history since 1946. Results are published in our Annual Reports and in a peer-reviewed Journal. The LFS is also a 'Lundy fan club' for people who love the island and who want to learn more about it and keep in touch with other Lundy enthusiasts. The LFS is a registered charity.

2023 species records

With a welcome increase in the number of fauna and flora records being entered in the LFS logbook, held on the island in the Marisco Tavern, the size of the Annual Report has grown in recent years. To help control the costs of printing and distribution we have changed the way these records are presented with the use of narrative reporting rather than long lists of species records. The detailed lists of records are nevertheless a valuable resource so, for many taxa, these have been made available to view on this website. This page will be updated as records for additional taxa are collated and checked.

There are currently over 500 members of the Lundy Field Society, mostly in Britain but with others around the world. The society meets annually at its AGM which is usually held in Crediton, near Exeter, at the beginning of March. As well as society business there are talks on recent work on the island and an opportunity to meet other members.

Members often also meet on the island.

New members are always welcome - you can join here.

The LFS produces three publications which are distributed to members, a Newsletter in February, the Annual Report in the autumn and the Journal containing longer academic papers. The Journal is produced annually or biennially depending on contributions. The LFS promotes and publishes research on the island and members also carry out conservation-related work on the island.

If you have something to contribute, please contact the relevant editor.

Latest news

Building on the two previous successful DISCOVER LUNDY weeks in 2012 and 2016, and the 2021 week which was cancelled due to the pandemic, we are organising a follow up event in May 2026. The Discover Lundy week will give you the opportunity to learn much more about the island’s history, archaeology and natural history with expert members of the LFS sharing their knowledge through a series of talks, walks and activities.

2026 is the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Lundy Field Society so we plan to commemorate the anniversary with special events during the week, including a number of social gatherings which were very popular last time.

YouTube videos of the business meeting and the talks given at the 2025 AGM are now available to view online here.

You are invited to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Society at The Boniface Centre, Crediton, EX17 2AH on Saturday 8th March 2025 from 12 noon. See here for directions, but please note that a rail replacement bus service will be running between Exeter, Barnstaple, Okehampton and Crediton on the day. We hope you will be able to join us to renew friendships and meet other members of the Society.
